Increasing Invessel Efficiency At A Commercial Biosolids Composting Facility
نویسنده
چکیده
Throughput at commercial composting facilities greatly impact operational costs and the overall success of the operation. Throughput is defined as the total amount of input material that is processed (treated) to a predetermined level of maturity. Increasing throughput involves accelerating the process of degradation thus reducing the total time required to reach the specified maturity level. Numerous factors affect the process of degradation. Some of these are the material’s moisture content. initial C:N ratio, porosity, operating temperature, pH and operational factors such as aeration system and frequency of agitation of the bed of compost. Optimal conditions for composting have been studied and defined in the literature for different types of cumposting systems and compostable materials (Haug. 1993).

Bimlids ampstmg wntinues to be one of the more popular methods of biosolids management utilized in North America. According to the most recent BioCycle survey (Goldstein, 1995), 228 biosolids composting facilities were operational by the end of 1995 in the United States. The aerated static pile is still the most popular biosolids technology used with 101 facdities or 44% of the total being that...

متن کاملCompost age and sample storage effects on maturity indicators of biosolids compost.
Compost product safety and quality assurance are required to meet the needs of the horticultural, agricultural, and silvicultural user markets. At present, there exist no industry-wide sampling and testing protocols for compost products, thus limiting the production sector. The objective of this research was to test three methods for determining compost maturity. The study followed the composti...

The average American generates approximately 4.5 pounds of garbage per day, for a total of 196 million tons of trash per year, most of which ends up in landfills (Shortridge, 1993). Various government and private programs have been organized to divert part of this garbage (metals, plastics, paper and cardboard, and yard and food wastes) from landfills by recycling. Yard and food wastes often ar...
متن کاملA Recommended Method for Detecting Salmonellae in Composted Biosolids
It has been found in Australia and in the United States that composting does not always result in the complete removal of salmonellae from biosolids. It is therefore likely that monitoring of composted biosolids for salmonellae will be required in Australia to ensure the safety ofbiosolids products. At present rapid methods of detection such as PCR and ELISA are not sufficiently developed to mo...
